The Wilton High wrestling team closed out one of the best seasons in program history last weekend as the Warriors finished 41st at the State Open in New Haven.
The Warriors had qualified four wrestlers, a school record, and wound up winning six matches.
Two Wilton wrestlers, sophomores Nick Rende and Zach Zeyher, reached the quarterfinals, and finished the tournament with two wins.
Zeyher, wrestling at 160 pounds, had the biggest win on Friday with a second-round pin (at 3:36) of senior Joey Ryan of Trumbull, the FCIAC champ at 170 pounds and Class LL champ at 160. Zeyher had opened the tourney with a 9-4 decision over Freylin Jimenez of Plainville.
In the quarterfinals he suffered an 11-4 loss to Chase Lind of Ludlowe, the FCIAC champ at 160 pounds, and lost a very tough 3-2 decision in the wrestlebacks to Collin Crader of Ledyard.
Zeyher finished the season with a record of 38-12.
At 120 pounds, Rende advanced to the quarterfinals with a 9-3 decision over Jesse Walker of Ridgefield, before falling to Kyle Fields of Danbury, 9-0.
In the consolation bracket, he scored a 6-0 decision over Anthony Devanny of Ellis Tech, before bowing out with an 8-2 loss to Alex Starr of Lyman Memorial, the eventual third-place finisher.
Rende’s final season record was 35-5.
Freshman Travis Longo, at 106 pounds, lost his opening match to Noah Zuckerman of Warde, 4-0, but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a pin (at 4:36) of Dan Charron of Killingly. He then lost to Ben LeBlanc of Danbury, 9-1.
Longo ended the season with a record of 17-13.
Senior Quinn Reedy, at 132 pounds, lost his first match by pin to Ryan Angers of Tolland, but won his first consolation match with a 6-2 decision over Ben Stratton of Platt. His tourney ended with a 4-1 loss to Matt Jenkins of Haddam Killingworth.
Reedy’s final season record was 22-10.
