Members and commissioners who sit on any of Wilton’s many volunteer municipal boards have been invited to a Freedom of Information education session by First Selectman Bill Brennan.
The session will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30, and will be run by attorney Tom Hennick of the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission.
Citing a number of Freedom of Information complaints filed against Wilton’s municipal boards, Mr. Brennan said he felt board members may need extra resources in dealing with complex open-government laws.
“There have been some issues I believe education can fully correct,” Mr. Brennan said at a Board of Selectmen meeting last week. “A lot of it has to do with FOI requests. There are a lot of very talented people that serve on our boards. I have invited Tom Hennick to make a presentation on FOI laws that apply to all of us.”
Just after he announced the education session, the first selectman also reiterated the importance of officials being sworn in as soon as they become elected or appointed.
He said he planned on asking the chairmen and women of Wilton’s boards to become more responsible for the swearing-in of their board members.
He also said Human Resources Director Sarah Taffel is working on improving the record-keeping system for recording such events.
