Letter: Town meeting squelched negative comments

To the Editors:

By now many of you have probably heard that Sensible Wilton has filed a complaint with the State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC). To ensure that referendums are conducted in a fair and equitable fashion, SEEC regulations clearly spell out what parties supporting and opposing are allowed to do. Our complaint documents the many instances where town officials did not follow the law.

In addition, I would like to make some comments on how the town meeting demonstrated that it was never intended that opponents of the issue would be given equal treatment. As some of the initial opponents gave their three-minute limited comment, they were assured by the moderator that if they had additional concerns they would be allowed to speak later. Many citizens voiced their concern over the project and were awaiting a second chance to finish their comments.

Immediately after a proponent for the project spoke, the moderator allowed a motion to end comments to be made and voted on preventing many other citizens from expressing their concerns. The moderator also failed to mention that the motion was made by a member of the building committee who was in the audience. I ask you to make your own decision as to whether you believe this was accidental.

Since many of you were probably not at the meeting, you can also see the video on the town website, wiltonct.org, to help you make a decision as to whether the above statements are valid.

If you are also concerned about the way the referendum was held, please let us know at sensiblewilton@yahoo.com.
