Quilter Denyse Schmidt will offer a Quilt Block Workshop Friday, Sept. 25, from 10 to noon, at the Wilton Historical Society, 224 Danbury Road. The workshop is in conjunction with her current exhibition, Denyse Schmidt: In the Making — Historic Inspirations/New Quilts, on display until Oct. 3 at the historical society’s Burt Barn Exhibition Gallery.
Schmidt’s creations are modern interpretations of classic quilt designs — contemporary, functional textile art with deep historic roots. She is drawn to the simple charm of antique quilts, their unexpected color combinations, and the way a single block pattern can lead to an infinite number of variations. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to learn about Denyse’s creative process as she provides instruction.
Participants in this workshop will learn a simple, historic quilt pattern, as well as basic hand-sewing techniques to stitch the tiny patches together. Discussion will include how color, value, and basic design principles make it possible to create hundreds of variations.
No experience is needed, and all tools and materials will be provided. Participants will take home a nine-patch quilt block that can be turned into a tiny doll quilt or “mug rug” (coaster).
Registration is required. The cost is $20 for historical society members, $30 for non-members.
