Technology classes begin
Wilton Library offers technology classes for those who want to learn Facebook, the Microsoft Office Suite of products and more. The first classes being offered cover the basics — in computing and in Microsoft Office. Basic Computers will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 12:30 to 1:30, then repeated on Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 3, and Saturday, Sept. 26, from 12:30 to 1:30. This class is an introduction to the skills that are needed for follow-on classes. Topics include saving files, Internet browsers, email and printing. This class is limited to six people; registration is required. In September, The Basic Microsoft Office class is offered Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 3, and repeated that night from 6:30 to 7:30. This class serves as the preparation for upcoming classes in Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Topics include features common to the most popular Microsoft Office products, including the Ribbon, highlighting, cut and paste and more. Class is limited to 16 students and registration is required. For those who want to dabble in social media, the technology class on Facebook is offered Thursday, Sept. 3, from 12:30 to 2. This demonstration-style class is an introductory level class that explores what Facebook is about, how to post photos, find “friends” and talk about privacy settings. Registration is encouraged for this class.
Poetry in Motion is 10!
Poetry in Motion, the teen poetry performance program, begins its 10th year this September with the theme Inside Out. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can submit their original poetry (short or long; humorous or serious) addressing the theme which is open to everyone’s interpretation. Is it a brave face on the outside, hiding what’s inside; is it knowing the city inside out; could it be his shirt is on inside out; is it the love of the namesake movie? Approximately 30 poems will be selected for a two-performance event in March 2016 at the library. The poems will be paired with art and possibly music or song. Food enthusiasts’ book group
Wilton Library’s book group dedicated to Food Lit gets underway on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 11 to noon with a discussion of Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl. The book group is led by Pamela Lillis, a nutritional health coach, avid reader and lover of food lit. The group meets every first Tuesday of the month. Registration is recommended.
New 3D printer fun for kids
The Children’s Library is making its 3D printer available to kids ages 8 through 12 who have original 3D designs to print. Kids can design a 3D object at home or on a library computer, sign up for an appointment (one child per slot), and a staff member will print the STL file on the library’s Makerbot Replicator 2. Caretakers may wish to sign their child up for several time slots in a row if they anticipate a large project or for time to adjust the design during trial printings. Caretakers must read through and sign a Regulations and Usage Agreement Form before their child will be allowed to use the 3D printer. The dates for the 3D Printer Service are Tuesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 5 to 6 p.m., 6 to 7 p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m., and Fridays, Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 3 to 4 p.m., 4 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m. There is no fee for the service. Only original designs will be printed. Registration is required.
Lincoln discussed
Author Todd Brewster visits the library on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss his latest non-fiction, Lincoln’s Gamble. The book meticulously focuses on the six-month period leading up to the Emancipation Proclamation — a moment that proved pivotal not only to Lincoln’s life but also to the fabric of American national identity. Todd Brewster has served as Don E. Ackerman Director of Oral History at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, and is a longtime journalist who has worked as an editor for Time and Life and as a senior producer for ABC News. See the library’s registration link for additional details on the speaker. A Q&A and book signing will follow the talk. There is no charge. The program is co-sponsored by the Wilton Historical Society and Wilton Library. Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Elm Street Books, New Canaan. Registration is highly recommended.
Women’s wellness
The library has teamed up with Stamford Hospital’s Mobile Wellness Program to bring mammography testing to women right where they live, work and play. The mobile coach will be parked in the library’s front lot on Friday, Sept. 4, from 10 to 2. Women ages 35 to 39 may schedule baseline mammograms; women 40 years and older may schedule annual mammograms. The service is fully digital, fast, convenient and private. Insurance is accepted. To schedule an appointment, call 203-276-PINK (7465) and choose option 1.
Puzzles
People have been relaxing with jigsaw puzzles in the library for quite a while and now they may borrow and work on them at home. The circulating puzzles are located at the last set of book shelves near the catalogs. They are there on a first-come, first-served basis with no holds. The puzzles will go out for three weeks. Late fees apply for puzzles not returned or renewed at the end of the loan period. For information, call 203-762-3950, ext. 213. Let the fun begin!
