Tinker on a computer

Children between 8 and 12 years old can learn how to use a free online Computer Aid Design program in Let’s Make Something with Tinker CAD on Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 2 to 3 p.m. In this fun session kids will explore the software and learn how to make a 3D puzzle in the process. Registration is required.

Sharing Chanukah

Children of all ages are invited to come join the library’s Chanukah Celebration with Miss Shayna on Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 4:30. Together the group will celebrate the Festival of Lights with stories and songs. Children will even be able to share what they know or have learned about Chanukah. Registration is required.

Kid-friendly New Year

The New Year is almost here and children can get in on the party by joining the library’s New Year Celebration on Friday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 3. Kids of all ages will be doing crafts and other fun activities to ring in the New Year. Registration is required.

A break for all

Soon the gifts will be opened, the wrapping paper will be strewn all over, everyone’s batteries will be run down (literally and figuratively) and recharging will be necessary. The best way to do that as a family is to visit a wonderful museum — one that may happen to be on the library’s Museum Pass Program. With more than 10 museums on the list, including the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, there is something for everyone. The benefits range from free to heavily discounted admissions based on what each of the museums has to offer. The list includes Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Connecticut Historical Society Museum & Library, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, Discovery Museum and Planetarium, Earthplace: The Nature Discovery Center, Maritime Aquarium, Mystic Aquarium, Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Stepping Stones Museum for Children, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and as mentioned, the Intrepid. The passes are available on a first-come, first-served walk in basis. Passes can be held for one hour if available and requested over the phone. Passes are loaned out for three consecutive days with late fees applied if not returned to the circulation desk by the third day. The passes are free to Wilton Library patrons with patrons being responsible for any admission fees or special exhibition charges. The Museum Pass program is generously supported by the Van Raalte Family in loving memory of Peter Van Raalte. For information, call 203-762-6334.

Procrastinators’ safety net

As the hours tick away before Christmas and Chanukah, last-minute shoppers can still find delightful gifts for children, teens and adults at the library’s Holiday Book Sale in the gallery. Books, CDs, DVDs and audiobooks are available each day with inventory being replenished regularly by Santa’s elves (a.k.a. the library’s tireless book sale volunteers). For that someone who says, “Oh, I don’t need anything!” then perhaps the library’s Giving Tree is the perfect solution to find something from the library’s wish list that can be purchased in honor of that person. Where applicable, a bookplate will be placed in the item acknowledging that special someone. There are still a few days left to view the art exhibition, The Message is in the Medium and perhaps find a one-of-a-kind piece of art for that one-of-a-kind special person.

Inclement weather

With temperatures falling and gloomy gray skies laden with snow hanging low, bad weather may be here soon. Early closings or delayed openings will be necessary to ensure the safety of patrons and staff. Patrons who have registered for the library’s newsletters will be notified by emails regarding library closings, delayed openings and cancellations. Additionally, the library’s status may be found on several media outlets and websites. Radio stations include WEBE 108 FM and WFOX 95.9 FM. The TV stations notified are Cablevision News 12, WFSB TV3 and WTNH TV8. An automated message will be posted on the library’s phone line (203-762-3950) and an updated message will be carried on the library’s website (www.wiltonlibrary.org). Patrons can follow the library at twitter.com/wiltonlibrary, along with postings on Facebook.com (search Wilton Library Association). Patrons also may register with www.cancellations.com and www.ctweather.com to receive e-mail notifications of cancellations, delays, or early closings.

Please note: The library will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and 26 (observed holiday) and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. To register for programs, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org and click on Events or call the Circulation Desk at 203-762-6334 for adult programs, the Children’s Library at 203-762-6336 and Teen Services at 203-762-6342.

Miller-Driscoll’s new assistant principal is coming from Greenwich

Janean Carley

Janean Carley signs on to become Miller-Driscoll’s new assistant principal.

A Greenwich educator with 20 years of experience was selected from more than 80 applicants to become assistant principal of Miller-Driscoll School. Janean Carley will succeed Dr. Sheelah Brown, who retired on Nov. 23. Her appointment is effective Jan. 19.

According to a press release from Maria Coleman, director of human resources and general administration for the Wilton school district, Carley has spent her entire career in the Greenwich Public Schools, serving as a paraprofessional, a third and fifth grade teacher, a grade-level leader, a learning facilitator, and an assistant principal, most recently at the Glenville Elementary School for the past seven years.

“Janean has embodied all of the qualities of an effective leader,” Glenville School Principal Marc D’Amico said in a press release. “Over her tenure as assistant principal, she strived to redefine the position so that she could showcase her talents as an instructional leader.

“Janean is to be commended for her pivotal role in developing our school protocol for teacher video self-analysis, as well as our work in developing peer exploration teams. Janean is to be credited for bringing the student voice into IEP meetings by having children create videos showcasing their academic growth and presenting their efforts at full meetings with parents present.

“Janean has demonstrated how critically important the principal-assistant principal partnership is and that when melded effectively yields transformative results for the learning climate on both the adult and student level. She will be missed greatly for all of her contributions and years of dedicated service to the greater Glenville community.”

As assistant principal at Glenville, she supervises teachers in grades K-2, special educators, and essential area staff. She has also acted as assessment coordinator, overseen special education, developed service opportunities for students, managed the master schedule, coordinated professional learning, and participated in the development of the school improvement plan. She served on the building and renovation team when Glenville School underwent the construction of a new building.

She also assumed the responsibilities of the principal in his absence as necessitated by his role as lead principal for the Greenwich district.

Carley holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and elementary education from Providence College and a master’s degree in reading and writing from Manhattanville College. She pursued her administrative certification at Sacred Heart University.

During the application process, Carley participated in three separate interviews: an initial small-group interview, a larger interview with a committee from Miller-Driscoll School, and a final interview with the superintendent, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, members of the board of education, and other district-level leaders.

According to the release, Carley “impressed the broad-based committees with her record of success in Greenwich, her knowledge of teaching and learning, her ability to design effective professional learning opportunities for teachers, and her clear commitment to supporting all students.”

Warrant arrest on forged check attempt

A 46-year-old Bronx, N.Y., woman was charged on a warrant Dec. 19 with conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny, criminal attempt at fourth-degree larceny and second-degree forgery for an incident at First Niagara Bank in 2013.

The warrant was issued in 2013 based on her attempt to cash a forged check out of New York with an amount of $1,260.30. The accused is currently incarcerated in Connecticut and was transported to court by the local marshals. She was processed and arraigned in court later that day.

Allison Arthur, 46, of 3800 Carpenter Street, the Bronx, remains in custody.

He said he’d pay back and never did

A 32-year-old Wolcott man was charged with third-degree larceny Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. at 901 Ridgefield Road on a warrant.

Ryan Miller, of 17 Forestview Drive, Wolcott, turned himself in on a warrant issued by Norwalk police for third-degree larceny.

He was booked, fingerprinted and photographed, and posted $1,000 cash bond. His court date is Dec. 30.

The arrest stemmed from a 2008 case in which the accused cashed checks from a resident and said he would pay it back but never did.

Minor with alcohol

An 18-year-old Ridgefield woman was charged with speeding, minor in possession of alcohol, and third-degree forgery on Danbury Road Dec. 16 at 10:10 p.m.

Monique N. Barbosa, of 54A West Branchville Road, Ridgefield, was found to be in possession of two bottles of Yellow Tail wine behind the driver’s seat. She was found with two fraudulent Connecticut licenses that indicated she was older so she could buy liquor.

She was released on a promise to appear in court Dec. 27.

DUI charge

A 28-year-old Norwalk man was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane Dec. 15 at 9:19 p.m. on Danbury Road.

Michael Smollar, of 26 Belden Avenue, Norwalk, refused to perform a breath test.

He was pulled over for erratic driving by an officer on a DUI enforcement campaign.

Cars burglarized, one stolen

Two unlocked cars were discovered the morning of Dec. 20 in the Glen Ridge area with missing personal belongings, and one car was reported stolen but recovered in Bridgeport.

The stolen car, a 2016 BMW, was unlocked and the keys were in it. It was located in Bridgeport through the use of BMW GPS.

Police ask that anyone with information call detectives at 203-834-6260.

DWI charge

A 64-year-old Wilton woman was charged with driving while intoxicated Dec. 12 at 9:55 a.m. at headquarters.

Catherine Matthews, of uncertain address, was released on $2,500 bond with a court date of Dec. 22.

She surrendered on an arrest warrant issued for her by Norwalk Superior Court in connection with a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Sept. 9.

Competing barber damages shop

An 80-year-old man was charged with third-degree criminal mischief at Agron’s Barbershop at 17 Danbury Road. Charges were brought Dec. 11 at 1:18 p.m. after a surveillance camera recorded him damaging the lock on the front door when the business was closed on Dec. 4.

The accused, Frank DiMarino, of 5 Elm Tree Place, Stamford, is the owner of a competing barbershop in Wilton, called Razor’s Edge. He allegedly jammed a toothpick into the lock.

The accused admitted to causing the damage. He was released on a written promise to appear in court Dec. 20.

There were four previous and similar instances of lock vandalism at the shop earlier this year, but police could not say they were related.

DUI, weapon

A 44-year-old Trumbull man was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and having weapons in a motor vehicle Dec. 9 at 4:59 p.m. on Sharp Hill Road.

Michael Scheurich, of 28 Sunny Ridge Parkway, Trumbull, was held on $2,500 bond with a court date of Dec. 16. He had been spotted driving recklessly in his white Ford F-150, and after stopping him, police detected a strong odor of alcohol. He refused a field sobriety test and was found in possession of a telescoping baton weapon, police said. He had a suspended license due to previous DUIs, so he was also charged with suspended license, no insurance, and driving in the improper lane.

Restaurant ATM stolen

An ATM machine with an unknown amount of cash was stolen from Portofino’s Restaurant at 10 Center Street on Dec. 8 at 5:15 a.m.

Officers found an open rear door and a broken electrical outlet when they responded to a call from owners, about 45 minutes after an alarm had gone off. The burglars wheeled it out in a shopping cart, according to a surveillance video.

Anyone who saw anything between the hours of 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. is asked to call detectives at 203-834-6260.

The Wilton Police Department responded to no calls for domestic violence or verbal help during the weeks of Dec. 6 through Dec. 19.

Walking on ice is dangerous

The Wilton Fire Department, Police Department, Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Dive Rescue Team have issued the following warning.

“Many people, especially the youth of our town have been spotted walking on ponds and lakes in recent days. The ice at this time is thin at best.

“The Town does not certify the thickness or safety of ice on natural bodies of water. Only you can prevent a tragedy by not going on the ice and keeping your kids off the ice as well.

“While the Dive Rescue Team in Town has the ability make ice rescues, we prefer not to. Keep the holidays and all days to follow, happy and safe. Stay off the ice.”

Letter: Thanks for the yuletide cheer

To the Editors:

You may have wondered how those beautiful lights appear year after year at the corner of Belden Hill and Wolfpit.

It is a Kiwanis Adopt a Spot in Wilton. Every year, the lights offer us all a moment of enchantment as we drive by.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the hard work of Janet Karabin, who spends hour upon hour putting those lights up. From the top of the pine tree to the many bushes and the signs that are so cleverly strung together. So in this season of goodwill, I would like to offer a personal thank-you to Janet for a job well done.

We must also recognize the generous spirit of Barbara and John Klein, who live on the corner, for providing the electricity for this annual project.

So thank you, Janet, thank you, Barbara and John, and thank you, Kiwanis, for funding those lights.

Cheers from Chamber

$

“Happy Holidays & Thank You” was the festive and colorful message from the Wilton Chamber of Commerce earlier this week in an email blast to supporters and well-wishers.

The Chamber’s board of directors and executive director Debra Hanson gave thanks to the individuals who help make the recent Tree Lighting and Holiday Stroll “so special,” such as First Selectman Lynne Vanderslice, Santa (spoiler alert: Mark Ketley) and his assistant Joan Ketley, the fire department, public works, recreation office, the many participating businesses and merchants and other volunteers.

Special thanks also went to the Wilton Library, Nick Loafman and the Wilton High School Band and Sarah Michaels and her strolling carolers, Westy Storage and Marianne Wilson’s Complete Catering for a special Holiday Business After Hours.

But also appreciated were “Mother Nature for a beautiful night” and all the townspeople who attended and make this event worthwhile.

The other message common in Chamber missives is a timely one, namely to “shop, dine and enjoy Wilton!”

Chamber events coming in the new year: Jan. 11, Business Seminar, with Library and SCORE, “Your Elevator Speech,”, 6-8 p.m. at the library; and Jan. 19, Economic Forecast Breakfast at Marly’s Bar & Bistro, 8 a.m.

Hanukah: Jewish festival of lights

Rabbi Marcelo Kormis

Rabbi Marcelo Kormis

Hanukah is the Jewish festival of lights. For eight nights, we light the Hanukkiah, a nine-branched candelabra that is used to celebrate the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks and the subsequent rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

This year, the first night of Hanukah will coincide with Christmas Eve. It is very meaningful that light is a central element of both holidays. When days are growing short and the air starts to chill, this holiday season invites us to bring light to the world.

Jewish tradition is filled with legends and stories about light and darkness. One of my favorites is the one about a group of rabbinical students who were stressed because they couldn’t end the darkness that filled the room where they regularly studied. To teach them about the power of light, the rabbi told them to come down to the room, take a stick and start hitting the dark to make it go away.

The students, not convinced about the strategy, took a stick and started stirring the dark. As expected, nothing happened. Saddened, they went to the rabbi again. Do not hit, he said, scream to it, thus perhaps the darkness will go away. So this time, they went down to the room and started to shout until they were almost voiceless, but again nothing happened.

With anguish on their faces, the students went back to the rabbi who assured them that this time they would succeed. Go, take a candle, light it up and see what happens, he said. That night, all the students gathered in the dark room, and when the first of them lit a candle, the place slowly began to brighten. When the second candle was lit, and then the third and afterward the fourth, the darkness started to diminish, and when all the students did the same, the darkness finally disappeared.

From this story, we learn that a small candle can give us the necessary light to dissipate darkness and despair. As the rabbi advised his students, a small flame can give warmth and illuminate a dark room.

Fire has a unique characteristic in nature; it is one of the few elements that when transferred doesn’t lose its own essence. When one candle lights the others, it continues to burn and shine. The same is true in our lives. A kind word, a smile, a small act of gratitude can change the lives of others and give us the right perspective on our own existence.

As we move into a new holiday season, and as we intensify our physical and spiritual light, may we realize that life gives us many opportunities every day to learn from it, transforming our experiences, both the painful and the ecstatic ones, into a spiritual way to approach God’s presence in our lives.

Rabbi Marcelo Kormis is the spiritual leader of Congregation Beth El in Fairfield.

As part of a more than 25-year-old tradition, Cider Mill students worked together to collect a variety of gifts, decorations and other items for more than 50 anonymous local families this holiday season.

“The project began as a way to ensure families had a lovely holiday meal,” said Wilton Youth Services coordinator Colleen Fawcett, “[but] has grown over the years due to the generosity of those gathering goods.”

Donations from Cider Mill’s annual PTA Turkey Trot were also turned into grocery gift cards for the family.

Cider Mill’s annual holiday giving project is a collaborative effort that includes the help of the Cider Mill PTA, Wilton Social Services, and the Parks and Recreation Department.

“Parks and Recreation staff do the heavy lifting — delivering to families always in good spirit, happy and willing to spread holiday cheer,” said Fawcett.

“Each year, I am so grateful for the entire Cider Mill community, PTA and the Parks and Recreation Department — and I am reminded of how working together can lighten the burden for the families we serve.”

Fawcett said a total of 57 families were served through the program this year.

Carnelian Connection services corporations in greater New York and Fairfield County, as well as families and individuals, with instruction in mindfulness, the way of being present in the moment and balancing work and life issues.

New Year’s Eve fetes

Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve plans, if you like them on a grand scale there’s, of course, Times Square, where the extended forecast is for rather OK weather for this time of year (high of 43 degrees, low of 26, and zero chance of precipitation, but that’s hard to predict this many days ahead), according to accuweather.com.

Nearby, there’s Westport’s First Night fete, with plans that include bouncy houses, fireworks, music, magicians, face painting, Zumba, free tea, comedies and more. For details, visit firstnightww.com.

Danbury’s First Night is no longer; it was discontinued after last New Year’s Eve, after 25 years.
