Democrats’ state budget would cut Wilton school funding by almost $900,000

As Connecticut’s legislative session ended on May 4, a budget proposed by the Democratic majority would reduce school funding in Wilton by $891,813, according to a press release from state Senator Toni Boucher (R-26). This budget has not been voted on.

School funding decreases throughout the rest of Boucher’s 26th district are:

  • Bethel — $109,587;
  • New Canaan — $816,759;
  • Redding — $423,899;
  • Ridgefield — $1,258,066;
  • Weston — $567,084;
  • Westport — $1,078,974.

“The bad news is in,” Boucher said in a press release. “The Democratic budget closes the deficit, not by reducing the highest state benefits in the nation, but on the backs of our children and local property taxpayers. Seniors who are on a fixed income will be particularly ill-equipped to absorb the increased tax burden. They are already reeling from a financial squeeze that has forced so many from their homes.

“There will be no vote on the Democrats’ budget today, the last day of the regular session,” she said on Wednesday. “Though it should not, the continuing unwillingness of the legislature to act and put the state on a financially sustainable path still astounds me. Never have so many people expended so much effort and accomplished so little. The $960-million deficit will not be addressed until a special session, lengthening the tenuous and uncertain situation our local towns are facing from likely cuts in state aid and education funding.

“The Republican Alternative budget does not propose any of these cuts. We have presented a balanced budget that focuses on core services and education by making long-term structural changes and spending only what we can afford. By contrast the Democrats’ budget jeopardizes our children’s education.

“The governor promised a budget without tax increases. By cutting pilot funding and the Education Cost Sharing Fund, the deal that legislative Democrats reached with the governor, only further shifts burdens to local taxpayers.

“There is a better way to govern, but one-party rule in Connecticut continues to lead to business as usual, and to fewer private businesses willing to brave the tax-and-spend policies that the majority party has imposed.”

Boys lacrosse: Wilton falls to Tigers in overtime

Death, taxes, and thrilling athletic contests between Ridgefield and Wilton.

Connecticut boys lacrosse fans were treated to the most appealing of those certainties on Thursday afternoon, as host Ridgefield edged Wilton, 7-6, in overtime at Tiger Hollow.

In their first game back after missing time due to injuries, Peter Dearth and Schuyler Blair combined for the game-winning goal just 1:30 into OT. Blair got the goal off an assist from Dearth, giving the Tigers a crucial win over a bitter rival.

Ridgefield improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the FCIAC, while Wilton fell to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

Ridgefield’s zone defense was strong enough in the early going to minimize chances and mitigate scoring threats, but lack of substantive possession contributed to two Wilton goals (at 8:47 and 3:26) that put the visitors ahead, 2-0, at the end of the first quarter.

Just 1:33 into the second period, Dearth found the net on a quick shot to cut the Wilton lead in half. After Ridgefield flipped the script and curbed Warrior possession time, Mark Galione leveled the contest at 2-2 with 2:22 remaining in the half.

Wilton regained the lead on Kieran McGovern’s goal with 1:47 left in the second quarter, but Greg Gatto drew the Tigers back even off of a Drew Fowler assist with a measly 0.4 seconds left in the half.

Following a physical third quarter in which the Tigers and the Warriors exchanged goals to keep the game tied at 4-4, a gripping fourth quarter headlined what was an excellent contest.

At 8:10 of the final quarter, Dearth completed a hat trick to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead. Ridgefield face-off man Chris Costello then won the ensuing draw and took off to add another goal a mere eight seconds later.

Wilton’s Harrison Koch scored 14 seconds after that to make it a one-goal game, and then Koch scored again to tie the contest at 6-6, leading to extra time.

Costello won the opening face-off in OT and the Tigers called timeout, setting the stage for Dearth and Blair to combine on the game-winner.

“That’s a great high school lacrosse game that I would’ve paid to come and watch,” said Ridgefield head coach Roy Colsey. “Both teams deserved to win, and it was a really well-played game.”

Notes: Koch and McGovern led Wilton with two goals apiece. Harrison Bardwell and Peter Koch also scored for the Warriors, and Connor Drake and Brian Calabrese each had two assists.

Ridgefield starting goalie Kris Klemm left in the first quarter with a lower body injury. Freshman Daniel Parson filled in admirably with 11 saves.

Wilton’s RJ Romeo won eight of the game’s 13 face-offs.

Bronx woman commits check fraud in Wilton

Nyderah McDonald

Nyderah McDonald

Police arrested a 19-year-old woman from the Bronx on April 27 after she attempted to cash fraudulent checks at two different Chase banks in Wilton.

Nyderah McDonald of 1368 Metropolitan Avenue first attempted to cash a forged check for $1,900 at the Chase Bank at 34 Danbury Road in South Wilton. She tried using a forged New York state driver’s license.

When the transaction did not go through, at about 2:30 she went to the Chase Bank in Wilton Center at 33 Ridgefield Road, this time attempting to cash a different forged check for $2,100.

Realizing the account number on the check didn’t match the name on the check, the Chase Bank in Wilton Center notified Wilton police, who responded and took McDonald into custody as she was exiting the building.

McDonald was charged with third-degree larceny for her first attempt ($1,900) and fourth-degree larceny for her second ($2,100).

She was also charged with first-degree forgery for the fake driver’s license and two counts of third-degree forgery, one for each of the fraudulent checks.

Because the account number used on the checks corresponded to a real person, McDonald was tagged with identity theft as well.

McDonald was held on $25,000 bond and arraigned at Norwalk Superior Court on April 28.

Virginia Kuper, Ridgefield, AHA Board Member, introduced the Faces of Heart Ambassadors to the Go Red For Women Luncheon crowd. Their stories of survival from heart disease and stroke were featured in a video at the event. With Kuper, left, are Patty Macias, Cindy King, Selina Santos, Martha Glantz, and Beverly Paige.

More than 300 people, mostly women dressed in red, attended the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Luncheon and Health and Wellness Expo on May 4 at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa. They were there to learn more about heart disease and stroke prevention, and to support survivors.

This year’s keynote speaker was Connecticut-based David Katz, M.D., an internationally recognized authority on nutrition, weight management and the prevention of chronic disease. Katz asked the audience to raise their hand if they knew someone affected by heart disease, then another hand if they someone affected by stroke. Nearly everyone in the room raised their hands.

Katz told the audience that more than 80% of heart disease and stroke incidence could be prevented with their “feet, forks and fingers,” encouraging the crowd to make healthy lifestyle choices like exercising more, eating healthier and quitting smoking. He also spoke of the epidemic of childhood obesity and serious health consequences from it, including childhood diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and even stroke.

“Is there anything more unconscionable than a stroke in a child?” said Katz to a stunned audience when he presented statistics showing stroke on the rise in children and young adults.

May is American Stroke Month and the audience was reminded to learn the F.A.S.T. stroke symptoms by Lauren Scala, NBC 4 New York traffic reporter, who served as event emcee.

“If you see F — Face drooping, A — Arm weakness or S — Speech difficulty, it’s T — Time to call 9-1-1 if any of these symptoms exist.”

Heart health breakout sessions were presented by Greenwich Hospital and Stamford Health where women were provided with the tools, resources and inspiration to prevent women’s number one killer — heart disease.

Several local women were featured in two videos shown at the event. All are survivors or either heart disease or stroke. Selina Santos, of Wilton, was diagnosed with high blood pressure and aortic insufficiency at age 34. She visited doctors who diagnosed her constant headaches and shortness of breath to be stress-related, and told her to lighten her workload.

When she was finally diagnosed with aortic insufficiency, leakage of the aortic valve, her doctor gave her a choice of “lifestyle change or surgery,” she chose lifestyle change and is now a spin-class instructor.

“It’s been my mission to create a healthier lifestyle for others,” she said.

Her message to other women, even young women is to “not ignore the signs! What may seem like stress may be an underlying cause of a more serious issue. Put yourself first—it is not selfish, it’s necessary!”

Cindy King of Stamford, a heart attack survivor, was also featured in the video. Patty Macias, of New Rochelle, survived pulmonary embolism because her sister recognized heart attack symptoms early and got her to the emergency room quickly. Massalla Samuel of Elmsford, and Beverly Paige of Pomona, were two stroke survivors featured. They both survived and thrived — graduating top of their classes in college.

Martha Glantz of Mount Kisco had a heart attack at a Super Bowl party. She thought she had indigestion. But when it got worse and dizziness set in, she knew she needed to go to the hospital. “I always thought heart disease only happened to men. I want all women to know it can happen to you,” said Glantz.

Letter: Please vote on Saturday

To the Editors:

Please participate in the Wilton Annual Town vote Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Clune Center at Wilton High School.

Wilton has a town meeting form of government, which provides the opportunity as well as the expectation and responsibility for residents gathering as a group to address the needs of the town.

Many New England towns have moved away from this form of government, but Wilton recognizes the value of direct citizen involvement.

This form of government depends on participation. Our town charter requires that 15% of the electorate vote for a budget for it to be voted down. Last year the majority of voters rejected the budget! However, because we did not hit the 15% threshold of voter participation, the budget automatically passed.

We just had a presidential primary election with turnout for Republicans at 50% and Democrats at 58%. Last fall we had a municipal election with about a 37% voter turnout.

Many volunteers invest countless hours serving on town boards such as selectmen, finance and education. Respect the work they have done; come and vote to support our town and school budgets.

I urge you to vote yes, but the important thing is to vote!

Democratic Town Committee

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society presented Wilton High School junior Emma Braten with a prize check and Student of the Year Award for raising $18,000 for the blood cancer charity — the most money raised by a student in the state of Connecticut. Emma decided to raise money and support the society following her mother Maxine’s battle with leukemia, and did so by soliciting donations online and holding bake sales. Monroe 4, Wilton Blue 2

Wilton Blue traveled to Monroe on Sunday in a game that was truly a tale of two halves. Monroe opened the scoring with a perfectly executed corner kick and then added two more goals. Wilton’s Matthew Tully, Scotty Mills, Tommy Lowell and Luke Medalla then stepped up on defense in front of goalie Michael Cooper, who made some nice saves. Monroe closed the first half with another goal, though, to take a 4-0 lead.

The second half was a different story. Medalla minded the net and, together with the defense, kept Monroe scoreless. Robbie Ballentine and Christian Marroquin kept pressure on from the midfield. Luke Barbieri displayed his usual boundless energy, and Reid Petrie showed some great footwork and energy at midfield and striker. Wilton broke the ice with a Cooper breakaway shot and goal on a nice long lead pass from Matthew Tabet. Wilton kept the pressure on with near misses from Jack Dodman and Petrie and a nice run by Ryan Leung. Dylan Bender scored the team’s second goal on a beautifully placed shot from the outside before Wilton ran out of time.

Wilton Gold goes 2-1-1 at tourney

With four games scheduled at the Glastonbury Hartwell Tournament, Wilton Gold’s game plan was simple: Defend.

Game one against Hartwell Red and game two against Norwalk White included intense action at both ends. A single goal by Sawyer Prendergast during each match, combined with a goal by Morgan Felipe in the second contest, helped Wilton win both games. Goalie Grace Duvall and defenders Natalie Cronin, Caitlin Ongley and Taylor Felipe were also instrumental.

Game three against Trumbull United was similar: Strong defense by Jemma Bear, Anya Iyer and Caitlin Allen reinforced the game plan. A penalty kick that was blocked by Isabella Schmidt with seconds remaining kept the game scoreless.

Game four against Bolton proved more challenging after coordinated offensive drives by Julie Ursitti, Ella Savage and Mary Scally. But Wilton was not able to overcome a one-goal deficit.

Wilton Blue 5, Darien 1

Despite a game-opening surge by Darien for an early lead, Wilton Blue took control and handed the visitors their first loss of the season. In impressive fashion, Emerson Pattillo placed four perfect corner kicks, which were deftly converted into goals by Isabel DiNanno, Molly Snow, Kiana Gow and Jill Roberts, before Pattillo added a goal of her own. Strong defense by Charlotte Casiraghi, Mia Cawley and Larsen Burke supported goalkeeper Anna Joy, who made five saves. Beautiful passing and constant pressing from midfielders Whitney Hess, Kelly Holmgren and Heather Plowright kept Darien on its heels and helped secure the 5-1 victory.

Weston 7, Wilton White 1

Wilton had to contend with cold and dreary weather, as well as an extremely aggressive, fast-paced Weston offense. Despite that, Wilton got strong defensive play from Caitlin Gilchrist, Amanda Prather and Natalie Schlesinger. Wilton also had some outstanding saves from goalies Samantha Mims and Hannah Fitzgerald. The Wilton offense fought to combat the stout defense of Weston. Strong efforts from Marianna Lombardi, Maddie Radcliffe and Becky Arnowitz finally led to a breakthrough pass to Molly Alger, who managed to score the lone Wilton goal late in the second half.

Wilton Blue 2, Newtown 1

After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, Wilton Blue team came back to defeat Newtown. Wilton’s first goal was notched by Siena McDermott, who swiftly redirected a well-placed corner kick by Addison Pattillo. The game-winning goal was scored by Ashleigh Masterson, who pounded home a beautiful pass from Isabel Barbieri. Brooke Aleksiejczyk’s remarkable throw-ins created numerous offensive breaks for Wilton, including one to Grace O’Connor, whose nifty pullback move nearly set up a scoring opportunity for Jane Hughes. Wilton almost found the net a third time when Lindsay Morin sent Addison Pattillo in alone, but Pattillo’s shot sailed just over the crossbar. Wilton’s defense was strong all day, anchored by Morgan Breakey, Alexa Furst, Molly Kaeyer and Fiona Gibbons, who were all tenacious against a tough Newtown team. Masterson and Pattillo shared goalkeeping responsibilities and were both rock-solid.

Wilton Gold 2, Wilton White 2

In a showdown of town teams, Gold and White played to a tie on Saturday. With Catherine Walsh as starting goalkeeper, Gold dominated play early, but Riley Fitzgerald had an opportunistic goal to put the White team on top. Eliza Patty and Sophia O’Neil played strong defense for Gold, and teammates Missy Ongly and Maddie O’Neil were able to advance the ball for several scoring opportunities. Gigi McWhorter tied the score at 1-1 with a nice goal for Gold.

With help from Mary Kate Doyle and Kaitlyn Sullivan, Emmy Baer put White back on top with an early goal in the second half. As White midfielders Madeline Dineen and Sasha Langholm kept the pressure on and Caroline Luce, Lauren Moe and Jenna Peterson steadied the defense, Maddy Gillespie and Carolina Bukowski had shots on goal for Gold. Sadie Klyver, Addison Dobson and Ella Breitenbach had shots on goal for White, but Megan Dodman’s fierce goalkeeping kept the ball out of the net. Maddie Phelan’s goal on an impressive shot into the corner of the net tied the game for Gold.
