To the Editors:
I understand there may be plans to sell a portion of the open space on Old Danbury Road to a developer.
I agree it is a much better location for dense housing than Westport Road but …
This raises a number of issues:
It took a bond authorization approved by voters to acquire the land as “open space.”
In my mind, it would be appropriate and sensible for voters to authorize the sale of open space.
I would be very surprised to hear the Board of Selectmen have the authority to sell without voter approval.
Selling without a vote is best reserved for the disposition of consumable assets such as old fire engines.
What inducements is the developer offering to the town and proponents?
Who sets the price? The BOS or land experts? Is there a brokerage commission involved?
