Richard (Dick) E. Vosilus, 68, of Arlington, Virginia, passed away on 21 Nov. 2014. He was born May 24, 1946, in Norwalk, CT, to parents, Dr. Vitot J. Vosilus and Muriel D. Vosilus formerly of Brookfield, Connecticut.
A 1964 graduate of Wilton High School, Wilton, Connecticut, Richard earned many athletic honors, and was a standout in football as a halfback. He later attended the University of Connecticut before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During service to his country, he was stationed in Hanau, Germany, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the Republic of Vietnam in the Central Highlands at Pleiku. In Vietnam, he was an aide to the Honorable John Paul Vann and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service during that time frame. Afterward, he was reassigned to the Pentagon as an enlisted assistant on the Joint Staff, serving under GEN Daniel “Chappie” James in the office of the assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.
Subsequently after leaving government service, Richard worked for many years first at the American Newspaper Publishers Association and then at the Washington D.C. Convention Center, as an event planner where he was a senior staff member and was the lead planner in events such as presidential inaugural balls to name a few. He is remembered for his self-deprecating sense of humor, his affability to any and all especially those he worked with. He was well read, articulate and a challenging debater of the ‘establishment”.
Richard is survived by his brothers, CAPT Robert Vosilus (USN, Ret) of Pinehurst, N.C., LTC John Vosilus (USA, Ret) of Lansing, KS; sisters-in-law CAPT Diane Vosilus (USNR, RET) of Pinehurst, N.C., Terry Vosilus of Lansing, KS, and nieces Julie Vosilus of Overland Park, KS, and Kelly Vosilus of Lawrence, KS.
