Sophomore quarterback John McElroy played as if he had a different surname Friday night — something more like Unitas or Elway.
McElroy fired five touchdown passes to lead the Trumbull High football team to a 35-21 victory over visiting Wilton.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Warriors, who are now 3-4 this season.
After trailing 14-0 at halftime, Wilton tied the game in the third quarter on two-yard touchdown runs from TJ Savvaides and Patrick Ryan. Ryan’s score came after an interception by Matt D’Elisa.
Trumbull (3-4) regained the lead at 21-14 before the Warriors forged another tie when Savvaides scored on a one-yard run with 6:39 to play in the game.
But McElroy then connected with Adam Angelucci on a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the Golden Eagles ahead 28-21 with 4:20 left.
A 14-yard scoring pass from McElroy to Jack Kelly with 90 seconds remaining clinched Trumbull’s triumph.
