Middlebrook Math Counts Club members Jeffrey Huang, Larry Huang, Rishabh Raniwala and Alexander Koutsoukos placed ninth in the 2016 Connecticut State MATHCOUNTS Competition at the University of Hartford on Saturday, March 12.
Students from more than 60 Connecticut schools participated in the competition, which included a fast-paced oral round on algebra, probability, statistics and geometry problems. There was also a presentation by Boston University mathematics professor Robert Devaney.
Rishabh and Larry ranked 27th and 28th, respectively, among the top 25% of students in the competition, and Middlebrook School ranked ninth among the top 40% of competing teams.
The annual competition is sponsored by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and CNA Foundation that strives to engage middle school students in fun, challenging math programs in order to expand their academic and professional opportunities.
