Wilton High School’s band, orchestra, and choral groups earned eight gold (superior) and two silver (excellent) medals for their performances at the Music Adjudication at the College of Staten Island Center of Performing Arts on Friday, April 1.

Wilton High School music directors Frank “Chip” Gawle, John Rhodes, Betsey DeGroff and Marty Meade, 281 students, 23 parent chaperones and Wilton High School Associate Principal Richard Sanzo went on the trip to Staten Island, N.Y., coordinated by parents Sam Gumins, Jennifer Gardner and Patty Sylvia.

All 10 participating Wilton groups were judged by a panel of three judges and the received the following awards:

  • Wind Ensemble: Gold.
  • Concert Band: Gold.
  • Concert Orchestra: Gold.
  • Select Orchestra: Silver.
  • Jazz I: Gold.
  • Jazz II: Silver.
  • Concert Choir: Gold.
  • Madrigals: Gold.
  • Chamber Singers: Gold.
  • Bottom Line: Gold.

The following five Wilton seniors also received soloist awards:

  • Tessa Markham (band).
  • Elliot Connors (jazz).
  • Tristan Clark (strings).
  • Griffin King and Trevor Brown (vocalists).

“Make no mistake, those judges saw how strong our entire music program is and they knew, as did the Festival Directors, that without any single component of the ‘golden triangle of success’ — fine educators, supportive parents and supportive administration — it is impossible to either create or maintain a quality program like the one we have,” said Gawle.

The day after the Music Adjudication, the Wiltonians spent the next day at Six Flags Great Adventures in Jackson, N.J., and had a dinner cruise along the Hudson River.

Upcoming Wilton High School music performances include a Jazz Concert on Tuesday, April 26, and Pops Concert on Wednesday, June 1.
