Following in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote how he enjoyed pickles on a hot summer’s day, the Wilton Historical Society will present pickling in this month’s Colonial Cookery and Customs for Kids on Saturday, March 19, from 11 to 12:30.
This monthly workshop teaches children in fourth through eighth grade about food from this region in colonial times. While the food cooks, they hear about Colonial manners, morals and way of life. Pickling opens up many possibilities beyond cucumbers — cauliflower, radishes, green beans, even eggs.
The workshops will feature relatively simple dishes made with local, seasonal ingredients. Colonial recipes used will be adapted for modern kitchens. All participants will sample their own creations and take home recipe cards as well as any leftovers. Previous sessions have produced bannock cakes and pease porridge.
