The Wilton Police Departments Awards Ceremony will take place Monday, March 14, 6 p.m., at Trackside Teen Center on Station Road. The community is invited.
A new award will be instituted this year — the Community Police Officer of the Year Award — named in honor of the late Sgt. Thomas “TJ” Tunney. Tunney started his career with the Wilton Police Department in 1985 and was promoted to sergeant in 2000. During his career he received many commendations, as well as the department’s Medal of Valor Award, which is one of its highest honors. He also received The New England Association — Chiefs of Police Medal of Valor and the American Red Cross Heroes Award for rescuing a man who was trapped in a car that was on fire after a motor vehicle accident.
The award, a police department press release said, is being named for Tunney for “his tremendous involvement with and care for the citizens of Wilton.Throughout Sgt. Tunney’s career the police department has received countless letters praising him for his involvement with the community. He was a great advocate for the people of Wilton and was well respected by his peers.”
In years to come this award will be granted to a member of the Wilton Police Department who distinguishes themselves from their peers by their actions involving the Wilton community. The award will acknowledge members of the police department who have demonstrated outstanding service to the community with particular emphasis on the Wilton Police values of integrity, respect, professionalism, and community support.
Other awards to be given include the Medal of Honor, Medal of Valor, Meritorious Police Service, Police Officer of the Year, Emergency Medical Service, Citation of Commendation.
