Going solar
The Town of Wilton has been selected to be part of a State/Town-sponsored program for solar power. This month’s Wilton Go Green/Wilton Library Green Speaker Series on Tuesday, March 8, again offers Solarize Wilton, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Solarize Wilton offers a discounted solar group-purchasing program with a preselected solar installer to all Wilton residents. The community will learn more about going solar through this workshop. Attendees can sign up for a free, no-obligation solar site assessment to find out if their homes are good for solar by going to www.SolarizeCT.com/Wilton. This is a repeat of the program held Jan. 12. This Green Speaker talk is co-sponsored by Wilton Go Green, Wilton Energy Conservation Commission and Wilton Library. There is no charge. Registration is recommended.
Survivors’ group meeting
The monthly Breast Cancer Survivors’ Support Group gathering takes place on Tuesday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. This meeting is for post-treatment cancer survivors and is sponsored by the Breast Cancer Survival Center. Questions may be directed to Nina Marino at 203-857-7304. To extend the evening, participants may want to take advantage of the Ladies’ Night Out on the same night described below. Registration is recommended for the support group and required for the DIY event.
Make, mingle and mix
Many assume that March Madness is all about college basketball, but Wilton Library’s take puts a twist on things. March Makers Madness is a modern take on Ladies’ Night Out which is set for Tuesday, March 8, from 8 to 10 p.m. Ladies can come with friends or make new ones to join in the fun of making things — etched wine glasses, embellished stone trivets, dazzling candy stands — or just relax and color. These DIY projects are simple to do, especially with a glass of wine in one’s hand. No experience is necessary; library staff members will be on hand to help with instruction. Materials, appetizers and wine will be provided. The fee is $25 due at the time of registration on the library’s website.
Free movies and music
Melissa Baker demonstrates how to easily download movies, TV shows and music using Hoopla, a free 24/7 service through Wilton Library. The Free Downloads – Movies and Music session takes place at the Senior Center on Wednesday, March 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants should bring their own devices, passwords and Wilton Library cards to get the most out of the class. The program is presented by Wilton Library for seniors at the Senior Center, Comstock Community Center. Registration is through the library’s website or by calling 203-762-6334.
College process woes
The college process has come to be viewed as The Big Event in the lives of students and their families. The pressure associated with The Big Event often creates a lot of negative fallout such as ruptured relationships and high levels of stress and anxiety. In Parent Connection: Managing the College Frenzy, on Thursday, March 10, from 10 – 11:30 a.m., parent coach and clinical psychologist Susan Bauerfeld, Ph.D. and college consultant Victoria Hirsch will offer tips, strategies and suggestions for viewing the college process as a natural next step rather than The Big Event and for managing the process in ways that foster connection and resilience rather than discord and despair. This presentation is aimed at parents of 8th-12th graders. All parents and interested parties are welcome to attend. The program is presented by Wilton Youth Council’s Parent Connection and the library. Registration is strongly encouraged.
The Odyssey deconstructed
Join Dr. Gerald Weiss as he leads Heroes, Homecomings, Hospitality and Human-Ness: The Role of Xenia in The Odyssey beginning Thursday, March 10, from 10:30 to noon. The four-part series continues on March 17, 24 and 31. The focus in the series is on the Achaean (Greek) Heroes (primarily Odysseus) returning from the Trojan War and whether their Homecomings are either helped or hindered by the kind of Xenia (Hospitality) they meet on their journeys and at home, as well as how their treatment reflects on one’s Human-Ness. Examples of the guest-host relationship throughout The Odyssey will be explored and its role in defining what it meant to be human then as well as its connection to today’s world. Dr. Gerald Weiss earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in classical languages from St. Louis University. He pursued graduate studies in Philosophy and Theology at Innsbruck University in Austria and later at the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, where he received his Ph.D. While writing his dissertation, he taught for a year at the Rome Center of Loyola University of Chicago. Upon returning to the United States he taught philosophy/theology/religious studies at Seton Hall, St. Louis, and various other universities. There is no charge for the program and packets are available at the library’s circulation desk. Advance registration is required.
Photography on exhibit
The Wilton Arts Council Focus ’16 Photography Exhibition opens at the library on Friday, March 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This annual juried show features photographers from around the region, including student categories. A majority of the photographs will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibit runs through April 1. The reception is free and open to the public.
