Tea party delight
The library is inviting kids ages 4 and up to join in on the Raggedy Ann Valentine Tea Party on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 3:30. Children will hear some of the timeless Raggedy Ann and Andy stories by John Gruelle, a Wilton resident, who wrote them for his daughter Marcella a hundred years ago. The kids will craft old-fashioned valentines and then attend the tea party. A pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls will be given away. Children can bring their own Raggedy Ann dolls or Teddies if they wish. Registration is required. Please check with the Children’s Library staff before signing up if a child has food allergies.
Makers make Valentine gifts and more
The library offers a number of Valentine-themed classes this week so that people can make gifts or cards for their special someones. On Friday, Feb. 12, Make Valentine’s Day Cards gets underway from 10 to 11:30 using the library’s die cutter. A drop-in session for making Valentine’s Day cards also happens on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. Two classes on the electronic sewing machine take place on Tuesday, Feb. 16 with Monogram It!, from 10 to 11:30 and Embroider It! is on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 10 to 11:30. In both classes participants will be introduced to the electronic sewing machine and be able to work on a tea towel, apron, baby bib or burp cloth. Aprons are available for $7; all other items are $5. 3D Printing for Beginners is on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. It gives people the basics after which they can sign up for individual sessions to make their own 3D projects. Speaking of projects, for anyone who has old videos they want to convert to digital, the library offers New Life for Old Videos on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 2 to 3:30. On Friday, Feb. 19, makers can learn how to work with soldering in the program, Solder Craft with Blinkie Pins, from 10 to 11:30. The programs are for seventh graders to adults and sixth graders accompanied by adults who are willing to learn, too. Attendees must have valid Connecticut library cards and signed Innovation Station agreement forms which should be brought to the workshops. Registration is required for all of the programs except for the drop-in Valentine’s Day cards.
PC 101
This week’s Technology Classes, I Have a New PC, are on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 12:30 to 2 and again from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This class is for the “never-ever” and those who have just purchased PC computers but are not quite sure how to get started. This is a free demonstration-style class taught by Mary Anne Franco with topics that include how to get on the Internet, settings, and popular applications. Note: This class is for PC users, not MacBook and iMac users. Registration is encouraged.
Comedic documentary featured
Next week’s New Perspective Film Series selection, Meet the Patels, will be screened on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. This is a 2015 American romantic comedy documentary (read real life) that takes a fun look at Ravi Patel, an almost 30-year old Indian-American, and how he handles the woman of his dreams and his parents’ expectations about arranged marriages. The film is directed by Ravi and his sister Geeta. The film had its international premiere at Hot Docs in April 2015. Fox Searchlight has acquired the remake rights after the documentary won the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival. There is a suggested donation of $5 to offset costs. Refreshments served. The New Perspectives Documentary series is programmed and moderated by filmmaker, Megan Smith-Harris. A Q&A will follow the film. Registration is highly recommended.
New coding club for girls
The library is offering a new program for girls in grades 6 through 12 called Girls Who Code Club in which participants will learn to create mobile apps, games and websites. The club is part of a national club that offers project-based activities in a fun and creative environment and kids do not have to have any experience — just an enthusiasm and willingness to try new things. This is an ongoing program where each week builds on skills learned in previous weeks. The girls will meet for 13 Sundays, from Feb. 21 through June 5 on the following dates and times: Feb. 21 from 1 to 5; Feb. 28 from 1 to 3; March 6, 13 and 20 from 1 to 3; April 3 and 17 from 1 to 5; April 24 from 1 to 3; May 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 1 to 3; and June 5 from 1 to 5. Registration is required. The program is supported by Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization with a mission “to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st Century opportunities.”
Oscar buzz
It’s that time of year again when people are glued to their screens large and small to pick the winners for the 88th Annual Academy Awards. The library has all the fun and excitement, minus the red carpet fashions, with Oscar ballots that patrons can fill out and submit. The winner with the most correct answers will receive three free DVD rentals. The ballot consists of nine categories ranging from Best Picture to Best Foreign Feature. Ballots are available at the Circulation Desk and must be returned by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. There is still time to rent some of the contenders such as The Martian, Bridge of Spies and Mad Max, Fury Road in the Best Picture category and Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep and When Marnie Was There in the Best Animated Feature. May the best picture, actor and patron win!
