Frederick C. Herot

Frederick C. Herot

On Feb. 6, 2016, Frederick C. Herot died peacefully while staying at a nursing facility in the Bronx.

A longtime resident of Wilton, he had an active volunteer life in the community. He was lighting director of the Wilton Playshop, a president of the Town Association of Wilton, a member of the Republican Town Committee, and later chairman of the Democratic Town Committee. He was chairman of  the Wilton Parks and Recreation Commission, a member of both the Wilton Water Commission and the Wilton Water and Pollution Control Authority, and for many years was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Wilton, and the Wilton Kiwanis Club.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he attended Case Institute of Technology (later merged with Western Reserve University), earning a degree in chemical engineering. He graduated from Case in June 1942, and three months later was an officer in the U.S. Navy, spending most of World War II in the South Pacific as a navigator on the USS Orion, a submarine tender based in Pearl Harbor. At war’s end he returned to Cleveland, where he met Louise, whom he married at the end of her junior year at Western Reserve.

In 1956 his growing family moved to Wilton when Herot became product development manager for Shell Chemical Co. and was transferred to the New York office. He retired as sales manager for the company in 1966. He continued working in several technical and sales careers, including real estate.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Christopher, Frederick III and Amy; grandchildren, Eric, Gregory and Timothy; as well as Linda and Sydney, who joined the family as wives of Christopher and Eric, respectively.

The family will hold a memorial service and reception for the community at 4 p.m. on Saturday,  March 12, at Wilton Library. Memorial donations may be made to the Wilton Library Association.
