Megan Murphy was a three-sports star — soccer, basketball and tennis — at Wilton High School, graduating in 1999.
But at Gettysburg College, she made her mark in a sport she hadn’t started playing until her senior year of high school — lacrosse.
The result was perhaps the greatest collegiate career by any Gettysburg women’s lacrosse player.
Murphy, who is now known as Megan Murphy Borman, was honored for her achievements by being inducted into the Gettysburg Hall of Athletic Honor in a special ceremony on Sept. 19.
By the time she graduated in 2003, she held eight Gettysburg records, including the all-time marks for points (284), ground balls (187), draw controls (272), and caused turnovers (98). Additionally, her season highs for points and draw controls and her career mark for draw controls were all Centennial Conference records.
A two-time all-American, she was named the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Division III Offensive Player of the Year as a senior, and Centennial Conference Player of the Year. As a senior, Murphy turned in the greatest offensive display in school and conference history. Over 21 games she totaled 97 goals and 43 assists, blowing away the school’s single-season points record by 39 points.
Gettysburg won three conference titles in Murphy’s four years as a player — the last two in 2002 and 2003, when her younger sister Kate, another WHS standout, was her teammate.
Murphy, who graduated from Gettysburg with a degree in history, met her husband, Rob Borman, while attending college. The couple welcomed their first child, Henry, this past April.
In the years since, she has founded Fun in the Sun Lax in 2005 to help young women learn to play lacrosse in a safe and educational manner. In 2011, she became the head lacrosse coach at Weston High School and led the team to a pair of Class S state championships (2011, 2013). She was named Class S Coach of the Year in 2011 and the Connecticut Post All-Region Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2013.
“I always think about how I only got to play lacrosse for five years,” said Murphy. “I think that’s why I love coaching lacrosse so much now. I loved my four years at Gettysburg. I got to play and get better at a great sport, be part of a game on the rise, play lacrosse for two years with my sister, and even meet my husband. It’s really nice to be recognized by a place that means a lot to me.”
