Book sale and giving tree
After Christmas there will still be time to take advantage of the wonderful bargains available at the library’s Holiday Book Sale, which is running through Sunday, Jan. 3, during regular library hours. Shrink-wrapped CDs and DVDs are here for the choosing, along with beautiful art books and pristine items for children through adults. Along with the book sale, people can still give a gift to the library from the Giving Tree, where people can find “ornaments” of items that would benefit the community by being in the library’s collection. The tree will stand tall in the gallery through Jan. 3. People can choose an item, buy it for the library, and indicate if it is in honor or in memory of someone, or to acknowledge a special occasion.
Independent training and projects
Would-be makers may find this a good time to think about a project idea or learn to use a particular piece of equipment in the library’s Innovation Station. Patrons can schedule time to receive one-on-one training on any Innovation Station equipment or use equipment independently once they have been trained. To see a list of available equipment as well as schedule time in Innovation Station, visit the library’s website at www.wiltonlibrary.org and click on the Innovation Station icon or email innovation@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions. New classes are being added each month including digitizing photos, making thank you cards on the die cutter, Monday knitting and crocheting sessions, and relaxing coloring sessions. Some sessions are drop-in; other classes require registration. Those who are interested may check the library’s website for offerings.
Media on the go
Some lucky patrons no doubt are receiving new tablets, smartphones and laptops for presents and may not be aware that the library offers free eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, music, movies and TV shows that can be downloaded to their mobile devices. On the library’s website under “Digital Library,” people have access to OverDrive for eBooks and audiobooks, OneClick for audiobooks, Zinio for magazines, Hoopla for popular music, movies, and TV shows, and Naxos Music Library for classical music. All of these resources can be accessed 24/7 from anywhere in the world; all that is needed is a wi-fi connection and a Wilton Library card. To help ensure that the library has the best digital media for patrons, a brief six-question survey can be accessed on the library’s website homepage or on paper by the library’s Circulation Desk through Sunday, Jan. 3. By taking the survey, patrons indicate what mobile devices they have and whether or not they are interested in taking classes about the library’s media offerings. The information will help library staff create 2016 class schedules that best meet the needs of the community.
Looking ahead to January
The end of the year is near and some people may be too busy to think about what is happening in January. Some programs that people may want to try out are happening in the first week.
Food Lit Book Group is a new group that formed this fall and are well on their way to forming a special bond. The group discusses books that are dedicated to “food literature.” The group is led by Pamela Lillis, a nutritional health coach, avid reader, and lover of food lit. The next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 4, from 11 to noon, with a chat about Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kitchen by Laurie Colwin. There is no charge but registration is suggested especially during the winter months.
The library’s art exhibition kicks off on Friday, Jan. 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with an opening reception for Jim Sparks’s Realism into Abstraction: Nature as Metaphor. The exhibit runs through Jan. 29 with a majority of the large-scale oil paintings available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds benefits the library. The reception is open to the public.
New Perspectives Film Series will be screening Missing People on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The film’s director, David Shapiro, who has won several awards and has been nominated for several others, will be Megan-Smith Harris’s guest during the Q&A. Registration is recommended. There is a suggested donation of $5.
Weather considerations
Although the bright blue skies and warm spring-like weather has the northeast in its grip, eventually as with all winters, snowflakes may fly. Should bad weather befall the area, early closings or delayed openings may become necessities to ensure the safety of patrons and staff. There are several ways in which people can stay apprised of the library’s hours before venturing out. Library closings, openings and cancellations can be found on several media outlets and websites: WEBE 108 FM and WFOX 95.9 FM. The TV stations notified are Cablevision News 12, WFSB TV3 and WTNH TV8. An automated message will be posted on the library’s phone line (203-762-3950) and an updated message will be carried on the library’s website (www.wiltonlibrary.org). Patrons can follow the library at twitter.com/wiltonlibrary, along with postings on Facebook.com (search Wilton Library Association), or be registered for the library’s newsletters for e-blast notifications. Patrons also may register with www.cancellations.com and www.ctweather.com to receive e-mail notifications of cancellations, delays, or early closings.
