Wilton Youth Football teams had the following results in recent action:
Sixth grade
Wilton White 14, Ridgefield Black 0
Wilton White opened the season at home with a 14-0 shutout of Ridgefield Black.
On Wilton’s first offensive play of the season, quarterback Grant Masterson scored on a 67-yard run only to have it negated by a holding penalty. For the rest of the first half, both defenses pitched shutouts, with Wilton’s defense led by multiple tackles for a loss by linebacker Eddie Keller and defensive end Ryan Jackson, tackles by cornerback William Ryan and a stout defensive line comprised of Kieran O’Neill, Ryan Farrar, Charlie Fischer, Joe Schiavone, Ben Pond and Ryan Keenan.
The Warriors finally got on the board in the second half when Masterson broke loose again on a 46-yard touchdown led by lineman Chris McCann, Quinton Kiss, Andrew Pellicano, Ryan Farrar and Ryan Jackson. Masterson’s PAT kick put the Warriors up 7-0.
Wilton’s next possession saw QB/RB Sean Wiseman score on a blazing 37-yard sweep, with another Masterson PAT finishing the scoring at 14-0.
Overall, the defense was led by linebacker Masterson (11 tackles), Jackson (seven tackles), Keller (six tackles), defensive end Matthew Giller (three tackles for a loss) and Mikey Longo, who had two touchdown-saving tackles.
Offensively, Longo had two acrobatic receptions for 54 yards from Masterson, with Dominic Roberts breaking off one 20-yard run and Giller also seeing three positive carries.
Eighth grade
Wilton Blue 21, Fairfield Black 0
Fairfield County Football League 2014 co-champion Wilton Blue launched its title defense on Saturday with a 21-0 whitewashing of Fairfield Black at Fujitani Field. Repeating last year’s formula, the Warrior offense controlled the tempo of the game, scoring on drives of 70, 93 and 50 yards, while the hard-hitting defense held Fairfield to three yards of total offense in the first half and just 38 yards for the game.
The Warrior offense was in high gear from the outset. Wilton’s talented offensive line of Maden Herve, Jimmy O’Brien, Jack Savarese, Jack Lenz, Noah Levi, Dominick Polito and Hunter Parks paved the way for a 17-yard rush by Reilly Sullivan on the game’s first play. Nine plays later, Sullivan scored on a six-yard run. Levy’s kick was good, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead.
Blitzing on their first defensive play, the aggressive Warrior defense took charge, stopping the ball carrier for no gain. The rest of the game was a series of highlights on the defensive side of the ball. Austin Andersen led the way in tackles followed closely by Noah Levy. Maden Herve was like a blanket on the Wildcat receivers while Kyle Hyzy made an acrobatic interception and Matthew Antonios, in his first-ever competitive contest, combined with O’Brien and Hyzy for a sack.
Taking over at the seven after Hyzy’s interception, Wilton marched 93 yards in seven plays, culminating in Andrew Smith’s perfect spiral to Herve for the Warriors’ second touchdown. The PAT was good for a 14-0 lead at the half.
The second half began the way the first half ended for Fairfield when Andersen tackled the running back for a four-yard loss. The Wildcats’ first possession ended soon after with another punt, giving Wilton great field position at the 50. After a holding penalty pushed the Warriors back 10 yards, Sullivan, Andersen and Hyzy took turns eating up big chunks of yardage. Hyzy’s 13-yard scamper for a TD put the game away.
