U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) will join the Wilton Kiwanis Club on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at its regular Wednesday lunch at the Tompkins pavilion in Kiwanis Park on Danbury Road.

Murphy is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and will focus his remarks primarily on that topic.

There will be limited room for the general public to attend, so reservations are a must and may be made by calling Bud Taylor at 203-354-0208. Lunch will be served starting at 12:15 at the cost of $8 per person. The senator will speak after lunch.

Kiwanis Park, site of the Wilton Family Y, is the club’s summer home.

Connecticut’s junior senator, Murphy was elected in 2012. In addition to serving on the Foreign Relations Committee, he also serves on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee and the Joint Economic Committee.

Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Murphy served Connecticut’s Fifth Congressional District for three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Fifth District includes Danbury, Meriden, New Britain, Torrington, and Waterbury.

He began his career in public service in the Connecticut General Assembly, first representing Southington and the 81st district in the House, and then the 16th Senatorial District, which includes the towns of Waterbury, Wolcott, Cheshire and Southington. While in the Senate, he served as the chairman of the Public Health Committee.

Murphy grew up in Wethersfield, Conn., and graduated with honors from Williams College in Massachusetts, where he double majored in history and political science. In 2002, he graduated from UConn Law School in Hartford, and practiced real estate and banking law from 2002 to 2006.
