Knee and hip replacements are two of the most successful surgical procedures to be developed in the modern era. More than 50 years old, they are also among the most common surgeries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 500,000 knee and more than 300,000 hip replacement surgeries are performed annually and those numbers are on the rise. In fact, hip replacements are expected to increase 174% in the next 20 years and knee replacements will rise even more — 673%, according to a study by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. As baby boomers age, there will be a huge demand oveer the next 15 to 20 years.
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis both cause joint pain and limit movement. When hip and knee pain interferes with everyday function, replacement surgery may be recommended. Based on the amount of arthritis or wear on a particular joint, there are different replacement options available. For many individuals, replacement surgery can significantly improve the quality of life.
Although much is known, there are still questions to be answered.
