Despite going 7-8 during the regular season, the Wilton High boys lacrosse team went into the Class M state tournament as likely the second favorite, behind only New Canaan, to win the title.
The high regard for a team with a sub-.500 record was due to Wilton’s challenging regular-season schedule and also a relatively weak Class M field, further watered down by Darien’s move up to Class L this season.
On Saturday, the Warriors showed why they are considered one of the favorites.
With Charles McGovern and Michael Lynch each scoring four goals, 19th-seed Wilton routed 14th-seed Bunnell, 18-4, in a qualifying-round game in Stratford.
The Warriors (8-9) will now go on the road again Wednesday to face third-seed Berlin in a first-round game Wednesday at 4:30 in Berlin. As one of the top seeds, Berlin did not have to play in the qualifying round.
Wilton decided Saturday’s game early, romping to a 7-2 lead after one quarter and going ahead, 15-2, at halftime.
RJ Romeo, Kieran McGovern and Zach Zeyher each added two goals for Wilton. Harrison Koch, Peter Koch, Brian Calabrese, and Hayden von Hoffmann also scored for the Warriors.
Corey Auten had two goals for Bunnell, which ended the season with an 11-8 record.
Notes: If Wilton gets past Berlin, it would play either sixth-seed East Lyme or 11th-seed New Fairfield in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
Wilton and New Canaan are on the same side of the Class M bracket and would meet in the semifinals if they both win their next two games.
Darien won the Class M title last year and has captured seven of the past nine championships. Wilton claimed the title in the other two years, 2011 and 2013.
