This week, in his letter to the editor, Mike Rudolph announces vacancies on Wilton’s land use boards. Mr. Rudolph, a veteran volunteer on town boards and commissions, was himself chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission and now chairs the Zoning Board of Appeals.

What is it he is asking his fellow citizens to do?

The Zoning Board of Appeals considers requests for special exceptions, called variances, to the town’s zoning regulations. It meet on the third Monday of each month at town hall. Members are elected, but if a space opens up the empty seat may be filled by appointment.

The Inland Wetlands Commission administers state and local wetlands regulations which protect wetland attributes such as flood and erosion control, water quality, and wildlife habitats. The commission approves building projects that would disturb wetlands and ensures disturbances are remedied. It can also issue violations, cease and desist orders and can suspend permits if a project is not in compliance with regulations.

Other boards that affect land use in one way or another include the Planning and Zoning Commission (elected members), Conservation Commission, Historic District and Historic Property Commission and Deer Management Committee.

There are many other boards and commissions that are appointed by the Board of Selectmen. As Mr. Rudolph points out, they are filled with volunteers who take an interest in how their town in governed.
