Medical emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, and having the “File of Life” can make the difference between life and death.

Cardiac Companion, LLC and the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WVAC) are offering Wilton residents free “File of Life” packets, complete with a medical information card, a window decal and a magnetic, waterproof pouch for visible and protected display in one’s home.

The “File of Life” includes current, complete information on conditions and medications, which are written down so EMTs and other first responders can easily access it if they are called to someone’s home.

“As first responders, it can sometimes be quite difficult to obtain accurate and current medical information, especially current medications, when we are on scene with a patient,” said Nancy Capelle WVAC EMT and founder of Cardiac Companion.

“If there is nothing written down and the patient isn’t alert, we won’t have this vital information. At other times, we are handed a bag full of pill bottles, but it is not necessarily clear which are old medications and which are current medications.

Ms. Capelle said a full and accurate health history is crucial for EMTs to be able to deliver the best care possible, “especially in situations where time is of the essence.”

Ms. Capelle suggests asking for assistance in completing the “File of Life” form if needed, and reminds residents to update their medical information every six months.

“File of Life” packets may be obtained at the Wilton Senior Center, Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps or by emailing Cardiac Companion at Nancy@cardiaccompanion.com.
